A cell phone ringtone is a form of personal expression for many people, and with that comes a whole host of style dos and don's. The most visible accessory a person often has is his device. Since most phones end up looking the same, ringtones are one of the best ways to achieve personalization.
Other options are unusual looking phones or personal touches like a sleeve or case in a striking color or design. While ringtones are a great way to personalize your device, they can also be used by other people to categorize you. For example, a marching band ringtone projects a very different image than a Doors song ringtone. Classical music ringtones project an elegant image and don't seem to disturb others. Also, higher-pitched songs generally sound much better on cellphone speakers.

A cell phone ringtone was key to finding an accused cop killer in St. Louis, Missouri. During a trial for the suspect, who was charged with gunning down University City Police Sgt. Mike King on Halloween night in 2008, his cell-phone was revealed as evidence. A few hours after King was killed, officers searched the crime scene for the cell phone.
The suspects' fiancee had told them earlier that the phone had a very distinctive ringtone and a photo of her as the screen saver. The officers found the phone near an abandoned building not far from where King was shot. Authorities recognized the ringtone – The Black Sheep's "You Can Get With This", and the photo, which was enough evidence to arrest the suspect a few days later near Kansas City.
